Adhesives for furniture in seating and waiting areas

In the seating and rest area, frame and upholstered furniture in the form of chairs, armchairs or sofas are standard furnishings. To ensure that this furniture can be produced economically and used for many years, the choice of the right adhesive is a decisive factor.

Applications

Dowel gluing

To create a stable frame from several items, the joints are often glued together, with dowels providing additional support where necessary. Dowels are the most common method used for joining two parts of furniture, both in the industry and the carpentry trade, as they provide a strong connection in a fast and inexpensive process. Automatic dowelling machines are used to drill holes where needed and to apply special dowel glues before inserting the dowels.

KLEIBERIT PVAc glues are often used here, depending on the production process specifications. When dowelling machines are used in automated production, the dowel glue must not clog the machine’s fine application nozzles, but also remain in place until the actual joining process is completed.

Our glues have been used in the furniture manufacturing industry for over 70 years. With this experience to draw on, we can offer you the right adhesive for almost every dowel use. Contact our experts for advice.

Gluing slotted, tenon and mortise joints

Slotted, tenon and mortise joints are the oldest type of connections for rack furniture, both in the industry and in the carpentry trade. The joins look good, provide a very strong hold, and stand for excellent workmanship.

>>The right glue is essential for this type of heavy-duty use. <<

First, the pins and/or prongs are wetted with glue and attached to each other, and then pressed together with screw clamps or pressing devices. Our water-based PVAc glues are ideal for this purpose. The finished units will only be suitable for heavy-duty use if the right glue is used.

Bonding foam materials in upholstery manufacturing

Upholstered chairs, etc., provide better seating comfort than solid seats. Such furniture generally features PU foam or polyether padding that is glued to particle boards. The whole furniture item must be made to last, so the adhesive used to join the materials has to withstand changes in pressure and temperatures as well as constant friction. It also has to be easily integrated into an efficient production process. Solvent- or water-based adhesives are fit for this purpose, as are hotmelts, depending on the materials used and the manufacturing process.

With access to the right application expertise, you can achieve fast and efficient production processes leading to excellent results. We have over 70 years of experience in the furniture manufacturing industry and extensive knowledge of the adhesives needed and used for upholstery production.

Spring mattresses

Spring mattresses are a true classic in the mattress market. Their high breathability and point elasticity ensure excellent sleeping comfort. The mattress core comprises a large number of spiral springs, encased in a fleece cover. To ensure high stability and long durability, the fleece covers are bonded together with a special adhesive that has to meet very complex requirements.

Low viscosity PUR hotmelts with a high initial strength have proven their worth in industrial production settings. The thin-liquid hotmelt is applied at a low temperature so that it can be absorbed by the fleece cover without causing any heat damage. It is particularly important that the adhesives used in mattresses are odorless. They should also be inexpensive and, for efficient production, have short open times.

Foam mattresses

In foam mattress manufacturing, all kinds of foam mats can be glued together, leading to many different mattress textures. There is a huge variety to choose from, ranging from cold foams to PUR foams, memory foams, and visco-elastic foam materials, all combinable with different lying zones, hardness grades, and heights.

Using the right adhesive is essential for manufacturing long-lasting and high-quality mattresses at inexpensive prices. The adhesives used must be odorless, soft, and provide highly elastic glue joints to ensure high comfort levels. In production, the adhesive is applied with either engraving or screen rollers and at a low temperature to prevent damage to heat-sensitive materials as well as to save on energy consumption.

PUR hotmelts are the ideal choice for this purpose.  They stick to almost all foam materials used for mattress production. They are also widely customizable, making it easy to adapt them to individual production processes. With the right know-how, the adhesive and its automated processing can play a key role in creating an excellent product made in a streamlined production process. Our reactive PUR hotmelts meet all the industry relevant requirement criteria, such as the Öko-Tex standard, Blue Angel eco-label, etc.

Protective mattress covers

Protective mattress covers are often used for hygienic reasons in non-domestic settings. They usually consist of a membrane film and a polyester or molleton fabric that are glued together, and should not impair the sleeping or lying comfort in any way.

Using a highly elastic soft adhesive provides for a good textile feel. The adhesive must also be odorless and machine-washable at high temperatures (hot wash).

Using the right adhesive is also important to ensure a fast and economic production process with short cycle times. Protective mattress cover fabrics are manufactured in a roll-to-roll process. The PUR hotmelt is applied with engraving or screen rollers; it must have high initial strength and be applied at a low temperature. Our reactive PUR hotmelts are specially designed for use in textile production.
