Adhesives, glues and assembly foams for wooden windows
Adhesives, glues and foams play a key role in the manufacturing of wood-frame windows. Due to their permanent resistance to weather conditions such as heat, cold and moisture, discerning window makers use high-quality PVAc glues, EPI systems or chemically reactive PUR glues that comply with stress group D4 according to DIN EN 204. There is also growing demand for products with resistance to dry heat, as tested according to DIN EN 14257 (Watt 91). When installing wood-frame windows, 1C PUR foams, which provide for good thermal and sound insulation, are usually used to connect the frames to the building structure. 2C PUR foams are generally used for window sills.
Wood-frame windows usually consist of an outer frame and a sash frame made of squared timber, known as scantlings. The scantlings are made of individual slats that are glued together in several layers.

Manufacturing scantlings
As a rule, three separate slats of solid wood are glued together to make a scantling. The adhesive or glue is applied either manually with a toothed spatula or with automatic roller or nozzle systems.
Once the adhesive has completely hardened, the scantlings are formed and profiled into a frame profile or sash profile.
Two-component dispersions such as KLEIBERIT 303.0, 304.1 or 304.4 – each with a hardener – can be used, depending on individual preferences. If a single-component adhesive is prefered, KLEIBERIT’s 501.10 PUR glue is the product of choice. All the named products have test certificates from independent institutes, and have been successfully used for many decades.

Manufacturing window frames
When making window frames, the prepared profiles are glued together using slot or tenon connections or wooden dowels. This can be done either manually or with automatic nozzle systems. The choice of adhesive plays a decisive role to ensure weather-resistant and long-lasting connections.
We recommend using KLEIBERIT 501.0, a single-component, ready-for-use PUR adhesive, for this purpose. Being water-free, it guarantees dimensional stability in the wood, and also offers extremely high and very long-term weather resistance. Further alternatives are the classic white glues KLEIBERIT 303.0 or KLEIBERIT 304.1, with the addition of 5% hardener to each, or the EPI adhesive KLEIBERIT 304.4 with a hardener.

Installing wood-frame windows
We recommend using KLEIBERIT’s single-component PUR assembly foams for fast window installation and effective, long-lasting thermal and sound insulation. They have good joint-filling properties and enormous adhesive strength.
The best product for the purpose is KLEIBERIT’s 1C PUR foam 540.5 (which hardens through humidity) and the matching corner angle adapter for foaming directly from the can without the need for a foam gun. A good alternative is KLEIBERIT 1C PUR foam 544.4, used with the KLEIBERIT 891.1 foam gun for easy use and precise dosing. Both assembly foams are very low-emission and meet the EMICODE EC 1 requirements (as defined by GEV, the association for emission-controlled installation materials).

Installing window sills
2C PUR foams are generally used for installing window sills. They harden independent of moisture in the air, and immediately after the two components have been automatically mixed in the container.
We recommend using KLEIBERIT 536.0 for this purpose. It is completely propellant-free, and available in a double cylinder cartridge. With its stable joint-filling properties and enormous adhesive strength, the foam permanently withstands weight loads, ensuring a long-term and secure hold.
