Adhesives for contract furniture
Contract furniture is intended for use in a commercial context. In contrast to living room furniture for private use, contract furniture is subject to significantly more strain. This requires an extremely high resistance to wear and tear with a particularly high-quality appearance.
Typical fields of application are:
-
Store fittings
-
exhibition stand construction
-
restaurants, hotels and vacation apartments
-
bars, lounges and clubs
-
conference rooms, meetings and banquets
-
concert halls and festival halls.
The right adhesive and its processing, combined with the appropriate materials, is crucial for the requirement profile at such a high quality level. In the field of contract furniture construction, we clearly rely on reactive PUR hotmelt adhesives. No other adhesive system offers greater resistance to heat, moisture and mechanical stress. In addition, they can be customized, which enables a customer-oriented, uncomplicated and economically efficient production process. Even better occupational safety, as well as lower environmental impact, can be achieved with our low-emission ME hotmelt adhesives. They are in no way inferior to the well-known reactive hotmelt adhesives and offer identical bonding and processing properties.

Adhesives for 2D surface lamination of contract furniture
Contract furniture is usually made of a combination of wood-based materials, which are laminated with a decor material to provide both the desired appearance and optimal surface protection. FlatLamination has become the established process for short cycle times.
There is a wide variety of designs and embossing options available – ranging from plastic PET and ABS films to decor papers and real wood veneers – providing a huge scope for modern interior furnishings. Some examples for laminating modular furniture elements are:
-
fronts
-
rear panels
-
shelves
Supermatt and high-gloss decors are a growing trend in contract furniture. The surfaces must be mirror-smooth, also across bonded edges, as even the smallest irregularities can negatively impact the visual effect.
KLEIBERIT offers a wide choice of adhesives for classic decor materials as well as for high-gloss and super matt decors.
The CompleteLine Method – surface coating and edge banding in one step.
Our tried-and-trusted inline solution combines surface bonding and edge banding with just one hotmelt in a production line. This method was developed together with the machine manufacturer and has proven itself on the market with excellent results over many years. EVA, APAO and PUR adhesives can be used, and are applied to the decor material with a slot nozzle.
We are committed to constantly tailoring our adhesive solutions to specific customer wishes in order to achieve the best results. Let us help you find the right adhesive for your needs and optimize your production process. With our many years of experience in surface lamination and edge banding, we have extensive knowledge of the standard machines and production processes.

3D surface lamination for contract furniture
Some furniture fronts have a 3D structure for aesthetic reasons. The elements usually consist of contour-milled MDF boards (based on PVC, PP or PET) that are coated with decor materials in a 3D deep drawing forming process. Real wood veneers represent the highest quality fronts. PUR dispersions are the adhesive of choice for this type of surface lamination: they are easy to apply with spray nozzles and enable extremely long-lasting bonds. The core and decor materials are bonded in a membrane or vacuum press, using pressure and temperature. In this way, the decor material adapts perfectly to the surface of the carrier material, resulting in a seamless furniture front.

Edge banding for contract furniture
Elaborately designed furniture for long-term use, such as contract furniture in commercial areas, has to meet very high material and processing quality specifications. Invisible glue joints between the surfaces and edges are fundamental criteria for high-quality furniture: zero bond lines represent top-quality bonding and ensure an elegant appearance.
Today’s furniture industry uses state-of-the-art edge banding machines, but is faced with constantly increasing requirements for economically efficient production processes. The adhesives used must bond a wide variety of materials securely and quickly, and allow immediate further processing of the products. Hotmelt adhesives with high initial strengths – reactive PUR hotmelts, in particular – are therefore ideal for edge banding.
The formulation of reactive PUR hotmelts can be individually adjusted to the needs of specific manufacturing processes, enabling efficient processing all along the line. PUR hotmelts also offer the highest resistance to moisture, heat, and mechanical wear and tear. EVA and PO hotmelts are also still popular: they, too, have a very high initial strength and good resistance to heat and mechanical wear and tear. The choice of adhesive invariably depends on the intended purpose of the furniture.
Considering the very individual different production processes and later use of contract furniture, individual consultation is essential to achieve the best results. The furniture manufacturing industry has been using our edge banding adhesives for decades. Contact us for advice. We will help you find the right adhesive and optimize your individual production process.

Profile wrapping for modular contract furniture
Contract furniture includes all kinds of elements besides the basic panels, where the carrier material is coated with a decor, e.g. laminated trimmings such as skirting boards and decor skirtings. To attach the decor, the adhesive is usually applied to the reverse side with a slot nozzle. If the carrier material is made of plastic or metal, a primer may be applied beforehand to achieve better bonding.
Complex shapes with grooves, molds or tight radii can be difficult to laminate mechanically and in an economically efficient process. The recoil strength of the decor material requires an adhesive with very high initial strength, but that is also flexible in direct further processing. The right adhesive properties and effective machine configuration are key to success.
KLEIBERIT has many years of experience in this field, and is committed to ambitious and continuous R&D activities. Let our engineers help you optimize your production process. We provide customized adhesive systems and have comprehensive knowledge of the standard equipment and production processes.

Gluing dowels and furniture bodies
After laminating and adding the edge banding, the panels of modular furniture are generally joined with wooden dowels.
Automatic dowelling machines are often used in production lines. Depending on the equipment used, dowel glues with special flow properties are needed. It is also important that the application nozzles don’t clog up when the machines are idle. All KLEIBERIT products are suitable for use with standard process equipment.

Assembly bonding
Gluing offers several advantages over using screws. Assembly adhesives bond almost every kind of material combination securely and reliably. Our STP- and PUR-based assembly adhesives have extraordinary bonding properties, high initial strength, and, of course, easy handling.
They are typically used for:
-
gluing handles to cupboard doors and drawers
-
gluing glass and mirrors
-
attaching skirting boards
-
mounting decor elements
Assembly adhesives are delivered in cartridges or flow bags, and applied with applicator guns. Browse our web shop for assembly adhesives and the matching applicator guns.
